Florida’s Juneteenth Festival
June 19, 2014
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Events and family friendly activities are held at Wells’ Built Museum and Wells’ Heritage House, as well additional activities around downtown Orlando.
The Wells’ Built Museum and Heritage House is located in the former 1926 Wells’ Built Hotel, the museum features over 6,000 square feet of display space showcasing artifacts, turn-of-the-century decor and memorabilia. The museum retains the original hotel facade and a guest room featuring authentic furniture and decorations of the 1930′s.
Orange County gained a unique place in the musical history of America through events at the South Street Casino and Wells’ Built Hotel, which were two very popular stops on the Chitlin Circuit that brought big bands and other entertainers to Central Florida. Musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, B. B. King and Ray Charles entertained audiences in Orange County at the South Street Casino and after performances, checked into the Wells’ Built Hotel.
